Apex was platted in 1895.  The Idaho Springs News reported on June 6, 1896 that: “Last year there were not a hundred houses in town. Now they number over eight hundred and more are rapidly going up. There are there large lodging homes. Two dance halls, and several saloons. Crowds of people flock in daily and the stages are unable to haul all of them. Many stay in Central City overnight and come out in the morning.”

A fire in 1939 destroyed most of the business district. A number of original buildings still survive, mainly as summer homes. Its peak population was estimated at 1,000 in 1896.
