The town was founded by John Q. A. Rollins, who prohibited such things as
gambling halls, dance halls, and saloons. A stamp mill was constructed in
1861 to handle the gold ore from nearby mines. Rollinsville got a post
office in 1871. Not only did Rollinsville have a stage station but it also had a train station below the town along the tracks of the Denver, Northwestern & Pacific. A large ice house stood along the tracks. In the days before mechanical refrigeration, this is where refrigerator railroad cars received new blocks of ice on their journey across the country. The ice was cut during the winter at area lakes and packed in sawdust until used. Click on an image for a larger version.
